Children will have the chance to become Junior Rangers and explore the hidden wonders of Melbourne’s wetlands these school holidays, with the City of Melbourne launching a hands-on program in Royal Park.

Running across two weeks at the Ross Straw Field Pavilion, the Wild About Wetlands Junior Rangers program invites kids aged 7 to 11 to learn, play and discover alongside the city’s expert park rangers.

Head of the council’s environment portfolio Cr Davydd Griffiths said the program was designed to spark curiosity and encourage children to spend more time outdoors.

These school holidays, we’re inviting all budding park rangers and nature lovers to step outside and explore Melbourne’s magnificent wetlands, Cr Griffiths said.

“With the guidance of our expert Park Rangers, you’ll uncover the hidden wonders of these unique habitats – learning, playing and discovering the incredible wildlife that calls them home.”

The program features a variety of nature-based games and activities, from wetlands treasure hunts and habitat hopscotch to water-bug surveys and nature-inspired arts and crafts.

The Junior Rangers initiative has become a popular fixture of Melbourne’s school holiday calendar, offering families a unique opportunity to explore Royal Park while learning more about local biodiversity.

Sessions will run from 10am to 12pm on September 23 to 25, and October 1 to 3. Each child must be accompanied by a guardian, and places are limited.

Bookings are essential and can be made via Eventbrite.
