The latest from East Melbourne

The East Melbourne community continues to be strongly represented and supported by the many community groups who provide important services to all.

The East Melbourne Group (EMG) committee of volunteers has been active during the past month and has many ongoing community projects.

Trivia Night

Deb Browne, Krys Hendrickson and the team put on a sold-out trivia night with more than 80 people at the Unitarian hall on July 5. The event raised $2500, with proceeds going to support the East Melbourne Community Choir.

Email Ann-Maree if you would like further information or wish to join the choir.

Upcoming event

East Melbourne confronts family violence issue

The EMG conducted a recent community information session on family violence.

Keynote speakers were Rasha Abbas, CEO of Jolimont-based provider inTouch along with Senior Judicial Registrar of the Family Court, Ceilia Conlan.

Attendees were presented with some confronting facts about the scourge of family violence along with some uplifting information on what is being done by inTouch and the courts to alleviate this societal problem. The EMG is pleased to be supporting our local service provider inTouch. You can donate directly to inTouch.

Bishopscourt restoration appeal

Bishopscourt is the “first house to be built in East Melbourne and the largest intact urban estate in the City of Melbourne”.

Listed on the National Trust Heritage Register, it has been under the leadership of Anglican Archbishop Philip Freier and his wife Joy for many years. The annual East Melbourne Community Christmas Picnic is hosted there and has been a mainstay of our community.

The property is now in need of some much-needed restoration. The flagstone pavers under the verandah, bluestones at the entrance and rising damp in the main building are badly in need of attention.

The EMG is supporting the restoration project. Donations can be made via the National Trust. •
