Speeding in Parkville
With great interest we noted the Lord Mayor’s comments about East Melbourne and the need for greater speed restrictions.
For many years we have pushed for the speed limits in Parkville to be reduced to 30kph stopping the “rat runners” racing through, particularly along Park Drive.
While there is a traffic survey about to commence in Parkville this is urgent. There is talk of more pedestrian crossings and speed humps, however, the biggest issue is the speeding cars.
Other key issues include the volumes of traffic which some in Town Hall feel is appropriate for our suburb even likening Story St to Albert Rd in South Melbourne.
With two schools in the area, North Melbourne Primary for many of our youngsters and of course University High we need restrictions and management.
While we are a small suburb by population in the city we are often overlooked when it comes to more important decisions.
Parking has always been a major issue, and I cannot understand how there are more parking permits issued than there are spaces. We know what the answer is but the long-promised parking study due at the start early last year has failed to materialise. We should remind all residents permits may not be sold.
Having been a part of the Presidents of Residents group that meets regularly it appears that those who shout loudest win. We would rather work with the City of Melbourne as a team, however given our high contribution with rates we deserve better. There is still a major focus on the CBD which is understandable but please reach out to our high contributing suburb.
Last month we held our AGM and the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Melbourne, Emma Johnston, was out guest speaker. Emma gave an amazing address and as a former student of University High School was welcomed warmly back to Parkville!
Those on the committee wishing to remain were returned together with three potential members who will be at our next committee meeting.
Also, we welcomed our newest member Bob Derrenbacker, the Dean of the Theological School at Trinity College. They are having a series of Evensong services at their chapel where their choir is one of the best in Australia. All are welcome!
The Royal Park Master Plan is still with the council – let’s hope common sense prevails and we maintain our wonderful natural park. Enjoy winter! •
