Melbourne International Comedy Festival returns with local acts

The Melbourne International Comedy Festival (MICF) is set to return from March 26 to April 20, promising its biggest and most exciting lineup yet.

Comedy lovers can expect an eclectic mix of international stars, beloved Australian favourites, and fresh emerging talent, ensuring there’s something for everyone.

Now in its 38th year, the MICF has established itself as a cultural landmark, providing a platform for comedians to showcase their craft and for audiences to enjoy world-class live comedy.

Renowned for its diverse programming, the festival continues to bring together comedy superstars from around the globe alongside Australia’s finest comedic voices.

The 2025 lineup is set to be one of the most impressive yet, featuring more than 700 performers delivering a dynamic mix of stand-up, sketch, improv, satire, musical comedy, and more.

Kicking off the festivities, the iconic Gala, proudly supporting Oxfam Australia, will light up Melbourne’s Palais Theatre with a showcase of the brightest stars in comedy.

The Opening Night Comedy Allstars Supershow will then officially launch the festival with a star-studded line-up featuring comedy royalty from around the globe.

Two of the festival’s most anticipated events are back once again. The 35th Annual Great Debate will see sharp-witted comedians battle it out on stage with their clever arguments and quick comebacks.

Upfront returns to celebrate the boldest female and non-binary voices in comedy, offering a night of stereotype-smashing humor and unforgettable performances.

For those seeking local talent, Carlton’s The Motley Bauhaus is the place to be.

Highlights include Geraldine Quinn’s Bastard Joy, a captivating blend of revisionist history, fantasy, and club vibes, and Uma Dobia’s Popera: Sex, Death & Politics, an innovative mix of “opera, original pop songs, video and on-stage chaos coated in pop culture”.

Families won’t miss out on the fun either, with the kids’ program featuring the Comedy Club for Kids during the Easter break, The (Very) Big Laugh Out at Fed Square, and performances from The Listies.

As one of the world’s largest and most celebrated comedy festivals, the Melbourne International Comedy Festival continues to draw thousands of visitors each year, offering a vibrant celebration of laughter and live entertainment that shouldn’t be missed. •
