City of Melbourne backs East Melbourne Neighbour Network with community space

The East Melbourne Neighbour Network (EMNN) has received a significant boost with the City of Melbourne granting the organisation full-time management of the Powlett Community Room.

This generous support will enable EMNN to expand its programs and further strengthen its role as a vital hub for community connection.

For years, EMNN has been a cornerstone of East Melbourne, providing essential services that foster social engagement, wellbeing, and support networks for residents. Now, with access to the Powlett Community Room seven days a week, the organisation will introduce new initiatives, enhance existing programs, and create more opportunities for locals to connect.

“We are thrilled to have this space available to us full-time,” an EMNN spokesperson said. “This will allow our programs to flourish, offering a welcoming place where people can meet, learn, and support one another.”

The expanded use of the Powlett Community Room will facilitate a diverse range of activities, including social gatherings, wellness workshops, exercise classes, educational sessions, and support groups.

The space will also serve as a hub for local initiatives addressing issues such as isolation, ageing, and community wellbeing.

“Our programs cater to East Melbourne residents of all ages,” the spokesperson added. “We offer pilates, yoga, chair yoga, and general exercise classes tailored for older adults, as well as early-morning pilates sessions.”

“Additionally, we’ve introduced classes for mums and bubs, pre- and post-natal mothers, and local preschool children through our ‘Grand Friends’ initiative, where older adults engage with young children in reading, play, and skill-sharing at the adjacent Child Care Cooperative.”

EMNN’s community choir, which meets on Tuesday evenings, is open to all and does not require auditions.

“We welcome new members to join us in experiencing the joys and health benefits of communal singing,” the spokesperson said.

The organisation also runs several book clubs that foster a shared love of reading and provide valuable social interactions. Meanwhile, the monthly Morning Coffee Speaker Series offers engaging talks that encourage conversation and connection among neighbours.

The City of Melbourne’s commitment to supporting local groups like EMNN underscores the importance of strong community networks, especially in an era where social connection is more essential than ever.

This decision reflects the council’s dedication to inclusivity and its support for grassroots organisations that make a tangible difference in people’s lives.

With this new opportunity, EMNN is poised for growth, continuing its mission to strengthen community ties in East Melbourne. Residents are encouraged to get involved and take advantage of the expanded programs now available at the Powlett Community Room.
