Why the Parkville Association?

Why the Parkville Association?
Rob Moore

On Monday, May 12 the Parkville Association will hold its 58th annual general meeting (AGM). In 2025 to have an association that is 58 years old is an incredible milestone!

The group was initially built by residents who wanted to save South Parkville from partial demolition. Clearly the beauty of our Victorian homes would have been lost and had state government succeeded, then perhaps the whole suburb would have been redeveloped.

For newcomers we older residents remember Park Drive having central parking rather than the grass and trees in a central reservation. During the ‘80s and early ‘90s Norah Killip fought several planning applications which would have changed to fascias of Parkville houses. At the time not all appreciated her efforts but as we look now at our tree-lined street with an estate first developed in 1873, we should applaud those efforts.

There have been many other instances whereas an association we have worked hard to preserve our built form and worked closely with the the City of Melbourne to ensure the residents interests are looked after.

This could be traffic management where we are about to have a new survey and community consultation, [as well as] the speed limits, chicanes in Gatehouse St and the banning of trucks, or our work with the local police and Ozanam House.

Getting Royal Parade heritage-listed and, of course, the latest heritage listings where all intra- and post-war buildings are protected. Given the overhaul of current planning laws by the state government this is critical.

We have worked hard to cross Royal Parade and embrace our university colleagues. We now have two of the colleges on our committee and constant liaison with the University of Melbourne.

Through close liaison with the council, we are involved in much of the local decision making and can resolve most issues very quickly. We are part of the process of the Royal Park Master Plan and are fighting hard to retain or wonderful bush park. In borth former and current Lord Mayors Sally Capp and Nick Reece, we have great supporters built by liaising regularly with them.

Finally, and most importantly we have helped build a wonderful community. Our social events are incredible, and friendships built in Parkville are very strong. We are seeing a new generation move in and many have children at North Melbourne Primary and University High where again we enjoy a good relationship.

Why all this rambling? We need more new blood from our younger members and residents!

When I came on the committee, I was part of a younger generation, but after nearly 10 years in the chair we need succession planning. In today's time sensitive environment some are time-poor, however think about our wonderful suburb and why you moved here. Help us keep Parkville intact and the beautiful place to relax, raise kids and enjoy our neighbourhood suburbs and Royal Park.

If you are interested in helping us please nominate for the committee and put a little back. Email me at [email protected] before May 12.

In Parkville many of us enjoy walking to Carlton. Since the late ‘70s meals at Shakahari were part of the joy for me. Sadly, this month they have finally closed their doors. Operating since 1972, we should thank the team for wonderful memories!
