Students at the Academy of Mary Immaculate have been given a unique chance to sharpen their stage skills ahead of this year’s school musical Frozen Jr, thanks to a workshop with accomplished theatre performer Sophie Weiss.

Held in Term 1, the workshop gave students the chance to learn from Ms Weiss, who recently wrapped up a national tour of Frozen where she understudied Elsa and performed in the ensemble. Her other stage credits include School of Rock, The Wizard of Oz and The Sound of Music.

“It was a real privilege to work with the students,” Ms Weiss said. “They were so open to trying new ideas and finding ways to bring their characters to life.”

The workshop was organised as part of the Academy’s build-up to its annual musical and was supported by performer and educator Stephen Valeri, who has long been involved with the school’s arts program.

Principal Sr Mary Moloney said the workshop reflected the school’s commitment to building students’ confidence and creativity through the performing arts.

“Musicals help shape young people in so many ways – they build teamwork, creative thinking and a strong sense of community,” she said. “I can’t wait to see it all come together in the final production.”

Located in Fitzroy, the Academy of Mary Immaculate is Victoria’s oldest girls’ school and continues to support students to thrive across academic and creative disciplines.
