La Mama HQ presents: Nu Disco

La Mama HQ presents: Nu Disco

From March 12 to 17, 2024, Nu Disco, a “one-woman odyssey into the beating heart of the club”, will be running at La Mama HQ in Carlton.

After a critically acclaimed debut at Melbourne Fringe Festival, star writer and performer Ellen Marning (Surat-Suratnya, Ned Kelly: The Big Gay Musical), returns to the stage as Trinity.

She’s in her late 20s, horny, full of bravado, and sweating out an existential crisis to Deep Acid House. Directed by Laura McAloney, Nu-Disco is a late-night fever dream exploring the highs and lows of life and love that only happen at 3am in the club.

Being long transfixed with the joyful abandon of the dancefloor, Marning took her research to the global centre of the club scene: Berlin – a city which offers a lifestyle where you could go clubbing after breakfast, take a disco nap, and stay out for days on end.

According to La Mama, Nu Disco is “built from audio recordings from inside the club and real-life conversations with the people who frequent them”, cracking open the culture of clubbing.

The show is backed by a techno-inspired sound design composed by award-winning musician and producer Robert Downie (Polito, Robbie Divine), which Theatre Haus described as adding “more fuel to the fire and is a driving force in the storytelling of the show”.

Nu Disco will run at La Mama HQ, at 205 Faraday St, Carlton. Tickets can be booked online.
