How CNLC adult education goes beyond traditional learning

How CNLC adult education goes beyond traditional learning

As the newly appointed executive officer at Carlton Neighbourhood Learning Centre (CNLC), my first six months have been both enlightening and inspiring.

Prior to my appointment, I was aware of the impactful educational work of CNLC.

However, it’s only since immersing myself in the day-to-day operations that I’ve truly grasped the depth and breadth of the centre’s commitment to our students. CNLC offers far more than just classroom learning; our offerings extend into a comprehensive, holistic support system that bolsters every facet of our students’ journeys.

In the heart of Melbourne, the CNLC has carved out a unique position, providing a beacon of hope for migrants and refugees who yearn for a brighter future in Australia. Our adult education programs are designed to support migrants and refugees by creating pathways to employment and further education. We believe that everyone, irrespective of their background, deserves a fair chance at success, and our dedicated staff work tirelessly to realise this vision.

Our programs span an array of fields, from literacy and numeracy, computer classes, through to vocational education pathways such as “sewing pathways” and “cooking pathways”, offering our students a comprehensive educational package. This multifaceted approach helps our students garner crucial skills and navigate the workforce landscape.

But our work doesn’t stop at education and our mission transcends the walls of classrooms.

Recognising the complexity of challenges faced by our students, we offer a “wrap around” student support system. Whether it’s providing assistance with language acquisition, cultural adaptation, offering one-on-one support, or facilitating community connection, we are here for our students, every step of the way.

In our quest to help our students achieve their goals, we understand that the struggle doesn’t end with gaining new skills or securing employment. It’s a multi-dimensional process that involves carving out an identity in a new land, and most importantly, fostering a sense of belonging.

The success of our students serves as a testament to our approach. Each milestone they reach, every barrier they overcome, further fuels our dedication. We stand with our students, advocating for their rights, championing their cause, and celebrating their successes.

In short, CNLC is more than an adult education facility. It’s a vibrant community committed to making a real difference in the lives of migrants and refugees and other adult learners, providing the necessary support to help them build a brighter future in Australia.

We invite residents of Carlton to visit CNLC, volunteer with us, or share your own success story. •
