After nearly four decades of serving up classic Italian cuisine, the original La Porchetta in Carlton North has closed its doors for good, prompting tributes to pour in from customers who shared special memories.

The Rathdowne St restaurant’s last day of service was on February 11 after opening in 1985.

“We would like to inform you all that the original family will be moving on and closing the doors,” the owners, Pantaleo family members Natalina and Azzurra, said in a social media post.

We are sending out our deepest gratitude towards everyone who has helped make La Porchetta Carlton what it is today!

“Your unwavering support for over 40 years has kept us going strong and made it even harder to make the decision to move on as we have grown so fond of serving all of you each and every day.”

The news was met with shock and sadness from customers, who expressed their gratitude.

“So sad to hear this news. My three children are in their 40s now, and we had so many family meals at La Porchetta in Rathdowne St … very fond memories,” one wrote.

“Thanks for so many memories of great food, service and prices - all in a place with a warm and friendly atmosphere,” another wrote.

The owners said they had “no regrets and we are now ready to move on to new ventures for the future”.

The store was originally opened in 1985 by Rocky Pantaleo, who died in a traffic accident in 2010, and Felice Nania, who were both Italian born.

The La Porchetta chain includes more than 30 locations across Australia and New Zealand.
