Empowering young voices for climate action in Carlton
In the face of the climate emergency, it is vital that all voices, especially those from under-represented communities, are heard in the fight for climate justice.
Carlton Neighbourhood Learning Centre (CNLC), in partnership with the City of Yarra, is proud to lead the Climate Voices Advocacy and Leadership Program, a 10-week initiative that equips young adults with the tools and confidence to create real change.
Launched as part of Yarra’s Climate Emergency Plan, the program has empowered 20 young advocates from diverse backgrounds.
Through hands-on workshops, expert guest speakers, and group projects, participants have developed a deep understanding of grassroots mobilisation, policymaking, and climate advocacy, to support them to define campaigns they wish to pursue.
One of the most exciting outcomes of the program has been the creation of three impactful campaigns by the participants, each aiming to address significant environmental issues.
The first campaign, ahead of the State election, pushes for 50 cent public transport fares, a policy that would benefit both the environment and the community by encouraging the use of cleaner, more affordable transportation options while helping address the cost-of-living crisis.
The second campaign advocates for greening public land around railway stations through community gardens and vegetation projects, a vision CNLC and participants hope VicTrack will adopt.
Lastly, the third campaign urges banks to stop funding fossil fuel companies, leveraging a student-led pledge from university and TAFE students to switch banks if they don’t act.
We are excited to see the impact of these campaigns and proud to support the next generation of climate advocates. The Climate Voices program demonstrates how, with the right skills and opportunities, young people can lead the charge toward a more sustainable and just future.
