Cricket great Chris Cairns inspires local Melbourne school community
New Zealand cricket legend Chris Cairns visited the Academy of Mary Immaculate in Fitzroy in September, delivering an unforgettable message of resilience and optimism to students, staff and parents.
The former BlackCaps all-rounder and ODI captain was the guest speaker at the school’s annual Father’s Day Breakfast on September 5, hosted by the Parents Association.
More than 100 guests gathered on Nicholson St for the special occasion, which combined community celebration with an inspiring keynote address.
Cairns drew from his celebrated cricket career – which included breaking Sir Vivian Richards’ record for the most Test sixes at Lord’s and playing a starring role in New Zealand’s ICC Champions Trophy victory in 2000 – before turning to the extraordinary personal battles that have defined his life since retiring from the sport.
In 2021, Cairns survived an aortic dissection that resulted in a spinal stroke and left him paralysed from the waist down. Just months later, he was diagnosed with bowel cancer and underwent surgery and chemotherapy. Despite these setbacks, he continues daily rehabilitation and remains determined to walk again.
“It’s not what you endure, it’s how you endure,” Cairns told the audience, sharing the personal mantra that has carried him through adversity. His message resonated strongly with the school community, encouraging students and parents alike to approach life’s challenges with courage and perspective.
The Academy of Mary Immaculate has a proud tradition of hosting inspiring speakers for its Father’s Day Breakfast, but Cairns’s visit will be remembered as one of its most moving yet. •
