Disappointment at VCAT

The Parkville Association and 130 other residents who were among the 153 objectors were obviously disappointed with the decision by the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT) as reported in this month’s Inner City News.

When Governor La Trobe set aside 10.36 square kilometres in 1850 it was to establish parkland and open space for the city of Melbourne. It didn’t take long to sell off areas of it to establish parts of Carlton, North Melbourne, and the General Cemetery.

As you read this column, the first three days of the VCAT hearing brought by Sinclair Dermatology will have concluded. The lead-up to this, finding professional witnesses and briefing them, collating other objectors and assisting all, has been very time consuming, but very satisfying.

After more than 12 months, many meetings, 153 objections and a refusal by council to grant a permit, the application for the corner of Royal Parade and Morrah St is being taken to VCAT by the developer to overturn the council’s decision.

Party in the Park

Parkville residents celebrated the return of their “Party in the Park” for the first time in three years. In spite of the inclement weather a decision was made to continue with the event on November 20.

We were delighted that the City of Melbourne refused to grant a permit for the demolition and building of a dermatological clinic on the site at 35-39 Royal Parade Parkville. More than 150 locals submitted objections; however, the applicant has decided to appeal this matter at VCAT.
