Affordable healthcare matters to all of us

One of the best parts of my job is sharing good news that makes a real difference to people’s everyday lives.

This month, I’m delighted to welcome the news that the Carlton Medical & Urgent Care Clinic is now offering 100 per cent bulk-billed GP appointments for all Medicare card holders.

For so many people across East Melbourne, Carlton and Parkville, this is more than just a welcome announcement. It’s one less financial worry when you or someone you love needs to see a doctor.

Our community is incredibly diverse. We’re home to students juggling study and part-time work, young families, older Australians, people living in public housing, and many who are managing long-term health conditions. We also have world-leading hospitals and research institutions right here in our neighbourhood, so we know just how important accessible healthcare is.

No-one should put off seeing a GP because they’re worried about the cost. Catching a health issue early is almost always better for the individual and for our health system. Whether it’s a check-up, managing a chronic condition, getting a child’s cough looked at or seeking mental health support, affordable primary care helps keep our whole community healthy.

The clinic is also home to the Inner Melbourne Medicare Urgent Care Clinic, which gives people access to treatment for urgent but non-life-threatening conditions without needing to head to a busy emergency department. That means faster care for patients and less pressure on our hospitals.

As someone who has spent much of my career working in the community sector, I’ve seen firsthand how much difference affordable healthcare can make. When people can access the care they need, they are healthier, families are under less stress, and our community is stronger.

Strengthening Medicare has always been one of Labor’s proudest achievements, and it’s something I will always stand up for. Investing in bulk billing means more people can get the care they need, when they need it, without worrying about the bill.

I’ll continue working to make sure people in Melbourne have access to affordable, high-quality healthcare close to home. Because good healthcare isn’t a luxury. It’s something every Australian deserves. •
