A step back in time in Carlton at Bridget McDonnell Gallery
Carlton’s Bridget McDonnell Gallery is displaying Julia Hilton’s Early Drawings from The Studio until August 9.
The exhibition, in commemoration of 58 years since Julia's first solo exhibition in 1966, showcases a forgotten collection of early drawings from the past including studio scenes, interiors, and gardens.
“In those early days, whenever we visited each other's houses, we always had a pen and sketchbook in our hands,” Ms Hilton said.
These drawings explore her life as a young student in 1960s Carlton and her artistic work as a wife and mother of five children.
Bridget McDonnell Gallery coordinator Patrick Julian told Inner City News that due to her position in those days, Ms Hilton spent much of her time indoors, primarily drawing the interiors of her homes. This has raised high expectations for those looking forward to visual representations of Melburnian houses.
“People want to see these sorts of interiors from what houses used to look like back in the ‘60s and see whether they've changed or whether they haven't,” Mr Julian said.
Julia Hilton’s artwork will be exhibited until August 9 at Bridget McDonnell Gallery, with prices ranging from $600 to $1000.
