Star Trek-inspired escape room coming to Melbourne

A new escape room experience planned for Melbourne’s east will take a page from the Star Trek playbook.

The creative minds behind Richmond’s Earthrise One escape room centre are planning a Kickstarter to launch Star Crew, a groundbreaking immersive gaming and roleplay experience.

“Our engineer has gone all out on this one,” creative director Jack Nolan said.

“At a certain point in the experience, the technology just melts away and players will find themselves completely immersed in the game.”

The Earthrise team will launch the Star Crew Kickstarter on world Star Trek Day, September 8.

Designed as a love letter to classic science fiction, Star Crew will see groups enter the physical bridge and command centre of a futuristic spaceship.

They will take on roles like Captain, Chief of Engineering and Science Officer and engage in over an hour of mission play, complete with a live game master and uniforms.

Nolan credits the rising popularity of escape rooms with people’s desire to share a creative experience while still being able to engage with the physical world around them.

“The majority of people who we’ve seen visit escape rooms are families,” Jack said.

“It’s incredible to watch people connect to this new world they find themselves in and have a true emotional experience together.”

Nolan says a locally developed video game Jumplight Odyssey was part of the inspiration to make Star Crew as realistic and engaging as possible.

“We’ve really put our all into the project and we’re excited to launch the Kickstarter and bring Star Crew to life.”

Earthrise One is open Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday for groups of between two and six.
